Anthropophagous The Beast | 1980 | Italy | Joe D’Amato

Another video nasty entry for Italian director Joe D’Amato, Anthropophagous tells the morbid tale of a group of tourists who arrive on a Greek island only to fall foul of a shipwrecked murderous cannibal, gone mad after being forced to eat his wife and child whilst adrift at sea. Infamous for a nasty sequence in which the killer removes a pregnant woman’s unborn foetus and tucks into it, the film was released uncut by VIP on VHS and was quickly snapped up as a potential nasty for that particular scene and other graphic gore segments. It even got a mention on the BBC News at Ten as a ‘snuff movie’!
