Cannibal Apocalypse | 1980 | Italy | Antonio Margheriti

A rather unique take on the issue of Vietnam veteran trauma, Cannibal Apocalypse tells the tale of Hopper, a veteran haunted by the cannibalistic tendencies displayed by his comrades. Years later, he begins to get urges of his own and reuniting with his war buddies, a rampage across the city ensues. Unlike the other cannibal films on the list, the film instead explores more complex themes of what war can do to a human being, something that attracted the main star John Saxon to appear in it. Despite this, the strong images of cannibalism and graphic sequences of mutilation proved too strong for the DPP’s tastes.
