Evil Dead | 1981 | USA | Sam Raimi

Another poster boy for the nasties scare and one of Mary Whitehouse’s personal pet peeves, Evil Dead is now world renowned for its cavalier but innovative approach to gore, horror and camerawork. A group of friends headed up by the honourable Ash visit a cabin in the middle of the woods for a vacation, only to happen upon a grisly looking text which is read out, bringing back demonic spirits that possess them and proceed to gorily dispatch of each other. One of the few nasties to really provide the non-stop rollercoaster of blood and guts that one would expect, the jury acquitted the film so much (presumably because it’s awesome) that the DPP eventually had to drop their case against the VHS released by Palace.
