Mother’s Day  | 1980 | USA | Charles Kaufman

Incorporating satirical black comedy into its otherwise nasty rape and revenge plot structure, Charles Kaufman’s Mother’s Day explores the concept of Psycho meeting Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Three lifelong friends Trina, Abbey and Jackie head to the back of beyond of New Jersey for an annual vacation, only to encounter two hillbilly brothers Ike and Addley who kidnap them. To the girls’ horror, the two idiots have only abducted them to impress their sadistic Mother, who approvingly coos and encourages the pair as they violate and assault the friends. After Jackie succumbs to her ordeal, both Trina and Abbey decide to teach the backwoods family a lesson, instilling some manners in the boys and making Mother take her medicine. The film was rejected for a certificate at the UK cinemas, so it had a degree of infamy in the first place. This may explain why it ended up being listed as a nasty on some constabulary lists, inevitably leading to a multitude of seizures by raiding police forces.
