The Last House on the Left | 1972 | USA | Wes Craven
Rejected for cinema exhibition in the UK, Wes Craven's debut film follows two young girls Mari and Phyllis as they encounter a dangerous band of sickos on their way to a concert. After the group torture, rape and ultimately kill them, they find themselves at the home of one of the girls. It's only a matter of time before the parents discover the truth and take the correct course of action. Unflinchingly nasty and fraught with tension, Craven's horror opus has retained its power to shock and still resonates today as a work of powerful brutality, making it not that surprising that it was hauled away as a video nasty back in the day.
