Zombies Dawn of the Dead | 1978 | USA | George A. Romero

Badly retitled for the UK market, this grand-daddy of all zombie movies is known all over the world as Dawn of the Dead, George Romero’s follow-up to his seminal undead movie Night of the Living Dead. As an epidemic of zombies begins to overtake most of North America, two TV reporters and two mercenaries decide to band together to escape the incoming disaster, finding a relatively sparsely occupied shopping mall. Breaking inside, the group set up a small comfortable slice of nirvana as they live in relative safety from the outside havoc. When a biker gang turns up to raid the place for supplies however, the group’s internal conflicts and desire to safeguard their new life get the better of them, allowing their perfect life to be unravelled by the newly attracted undead. Universally lauded as one of the best zombie films of all time and responsible for inspiring an infinite number of imitations, the UK authorities clearly sought to remove a popular icon of disreputable horror from the public.
